Does car insurance cover a touring caravan?

If you’ve recently purchased a touring caravan or are considering buying one, you might assume that your existing car insurance will protect both your vehicle and your caravan while towing. Unfortunately, this is a common misconception that leaves many caravanners seriously underinsured.

Car insurance, even at its highest level of cover, comprehensive, is not designed to cover any damage to your touring caravan. If you’re involved in a motor collision and are relying solely on your existing car insurance policy to cover all damages, there is no coverage to repair or replace your tourer.

What your car insurance won’t cover for your touring caravan

It’s important to note that every car insurance policy is different, so always check your policy wording carefully. Never make assumptions, and contact your insurer directly if you have any questions or concerns about your level of cover when towing a caravan.

Damage to the caravan

When towing, a comprehensive policy will cover your vehicle in the event of a road accident, but it almost certainly won’t cover any damage to your touring caravan occurred whilst on the road, leaving you to pay for all repairs out of your own pocket.

You may think that your caravan is most vulnerable while being towed, but many instances of damage or loss occur while the caravan is stationary, such as stored on your driveway, in a secure storage facility, or pitched on a site. A car insurance policy certainly won’t provide cover for your caravan when it’s not attached to your vehicle, so if your caravan is damaged while stationary, even if the incident involves a vehicle (yours, or others), you have absolutely no financial protection.

Recovery and roadside assistance

Your car insurance policy may include breakdown cover, or perhaps you purchased it as an add-on or through a second provider. If you break down while towing your caravan, this breakdown cover will typically assist with your towing vehicle, but it’s unlikely to extend to recovering your caravan.

If your car is recovered but your caravan is left stranded on the roadside or at a motorway services, you’re responsible for arranging and paying for its recovery. This can be expensive and inconvenient, particularly if you’re far from home or in a remote location.

Caravan theft

Touring caravan theft is a common concern, even when taking proper security precautions. Thieves target caravans from driveways, storage facilities, and even campsites, and they work quickly; a caravan can disappear within minutes.

Your car insurance will not cover the theft of your touring caravan, regardless of where it’s stolen from or the circumstances. This is a significant financial loss, so it’s important to protect your home-away-from-home with a specialised insurance policy that provides either replacement or financial compensation in the event of theft.

Alternative accommodation

If you’re on a touring holiday and your caravan is damaged to the point where it becomes uninhabitable, perhaps due to an accident, fire, or severe weather, where will you stay? Hotel costs, B&B accommodation, or emergency rental fees can quickly mount up, particularly if you’re away from home and need somewhere to stay for several nights.

Car insurance policies provide no assistance with alternative accommodation costs if your caravan becomes unusable.

Caravan contents

Caravanners are often surprised at how high the value of their touring caravans’ contents can be. The value of furnishings, clothing, kitchenware, electronics, outdoor equipment, awnings, and personal possessions can quickly add up to thousands of pounds.

A car insurance policy won’t cover the contents of your caravan under any circumstances. Home insurance might offer some limited cover for personal possessions, but this is typically capped at a low value and comes with significant restrictions, such as only covering items temporarily removed from the home, not permanently kept in your caravan. Many home insurance policies specifically exclude caravans entirely.

Public liability cover

Most car insurance policies will extend their existing public liability cover to touring caravans while being towed. The driver of the towing vehicle is deemed legally responsible for manoeuvring the hitched caravan safely, and for this reason, most specialist caravan insurers won’t provide public liability while towing.

However, your car insurance won’t cover any public liability claims once your tourer is pitched. This means that if it rolls off its pitch and hits someone or something, catches on fire and damages neighbouring property, or even if your awning collapses and hits a person, vehicle, or caravan, you’ve got nowhere to claim financial support for the repercussions.

Legal expenses

In a similar vein to public liability, disputes can arise in caravanning, whether with campsites, other caravanners, repair facilities, or even with park operators. Your car insurance policy won’t include legal expenses cover for issues relating to your caravan. If you need legal assistance, you’ll be funding it entirely yourself.

Proper protection with a touring caravan policy

As standard, a car insurance policy can’t suitably protect a touring caravan. Some car insurance providers do offer add-ons that provide limited cover for caravans, typically for an additional premium, but these are rarely comprehensive and often come with significant restrictions, exclusions, and lower coverage limits than dedicated caravan policies.

A touring caravan insurance policy from a specialist caravan insurance provider is designed with expertise and a deep understanding of the unique risks caravan owners face. Specialist insurers know caravanning inside out; they understand the specific risks, the types of incidents that commonly occur, and the appropriate level of protection needed, offering comprehensive cover against theft, damage, fire, weather events, and vandalism while your caravan is on the road, pitched, and in storage.

The cost of specialist touring caravan insurance is often very reasonable, especially when compared to the value of your caravan and the potential losses you could face without it. It’s a small price to pay for comprehensive protection and genuine peace of mind, so don’t leave your touring caravan unprotected – get a quote for touring caravan insurance today.
