From pitching in a field to smart stays: How caravan holidays have transformed

As part of our Compass 50th anniversary celebrations, we’re taking a nostalgic look at how the great British caravan holiday has evolved, especially the technology that’s quietly transformed it.

From lantern-lit evenings and roadside pitches in the 1920s, where travellers relied on basic shelters, portable wash kits, and even “latrine tents^{1}”, caravanning has come a long way. Early adventurers stopped wherever they could, but by the 1930s and 40s, informal fields began turning into organised sites, with shared facilities, roadways, and the first static caravans bringing running water and added comfort.

It’s a far cry from today’s smart, fully equipped holiday parks, and the journey in between tells a story of innovation, convenience, and changing expectations.

So how did we get from there to here? Let’s take a closer look at how caravan holidays continued to evolve through the decades.

Holiday parks take shape (1950s–80s)

The 1950s marked a turning point, as caravan parks evolved into true holiday destinations. No longer just somewhere to sleep, they began offering cafés, shops, clubhouses, and even outdoor swimming pools, creating spaces to socialise, relax, and be entertained.

By the 1960s, both parks and caravans were becoming better equipped, with full plumbing, modern toilet blocks, and dedicated shower facilities raising the standard of stay.

Margaret Lawford of the family-run Fen Farm Caravan Park reflects on the opening of their first toilet block in 1967 by her Great Grandad Arthur:

‘The opening of the toilet block in 1967 was the end of the “bucket ’n’ chuck it” era at Fen Farm. Arthur was in his 90th year. There were no showers, just toilets. There were 12 static caravans. Several people had seasonal tent pitches. The tents would be put up in April and taken down in September.

The overnight fee for a tent was about 2/6 (12 and a half pence)’

Behind the scenes, technology was steadily improving comfort too. The introduction of caravan heating systems meant chilly evenings no longer drove everyone under the blankets, while entertainment on parks continued to grow, with arcades and fairground-style amusements becoming firm favourites.

By the 1970s and 80s, these developments accelerated. Coin-operated laundries, mains electricity, and improved sewage systems helped parks feel more like a home away from home, while caravans themselves introduced hot water, gas boilers, and even portable air conditioning^{2}.

Booking a holiday, however, remained a hands-on experience^{3} , families browsing newspaper ads, posting forms, and paying by cash or cheque. Yet despite this contrast with today’s instant booking culture, the foundations of the modern caravan holiday were firmly in place.

The digital shift to experience-led stays (1990s–2010s)

The 1990s marked the beginning of a digital shift in caravan holidays. Parks began piping television into caravans and introducing early internet access^{4}, while static caravans themselves became more luxurious, with double glazing, en-suite bathrooms, and fitted appliances raising expectations of comfort.

By the 2000s, this transformation accelerated into a full digital revolution. Online booking^{5} became increasingly common, with platforms like TripAdvisor allowing guests to research and review stays before committing. On-site, internet access^{6} quickly moved from a novelty to an expected standard, often extending directly into individual caravans.

Technology was also improving the practical side of park life. Coin-operated systems expanded to include showers, hairdryers, saunas, and more, using coins, tokens, or smart cards, while touring caravanners benefited from innovations like integrated air conditioning and solar panels, offering greater freedom and flexibility on the road.

By the 2010s, the focus had shifted beyond convenience to experience. Holiday parks evolved into all-in-one destinations, offering everything from fishing lakes and climbing walls to spas, golf courses, archery, and fitness facilities, catering to families, couples, and adventure seekers alike.

Today & beyond (2020s)

Building on the experience-led parks of the 2010s, today’s caravan holidays blend comfort, technology, and convenience like never before.

Modern caravans are closer than ever to stylish holiday homes. Solar panels paired with high-capacity lithium batteries now power lighting, appliances, and even app-controlled heating systems, while built-in signal boosters, 4G/5G routers, and integrated antennae make it easy to stay connected almost anywhere^{7}.

Comfort has moved up another level too, with auto-levelling systems, electric slide-outs, programmable lighting, and climate presets bringing smart-home luxury on the road.

Across holiday parks, technology is enhancing the experience in more subtle ways. Arcades have gone contactless^{8}, meaning no more hunting for change, just tap and play. And as electric vehicles become more common, EV charging points^{9} are appearing on parks, adding convenience for guests and new opportunities for park owners.

A holiday that’s always moving forward

From lanterns and latrine tents to smart caravans and connected parks, one thing has remained constant: the British love affair with caravan holidays.

The technology may have changed, but the joy of escaping, exploring, and making memories together is as strong as ever.
