Understanding public liability insurance for your caravan or lodge

A comprehensive caravan or lodge insurance policy is made up of a few important basics. Many owners expect standard features like accidental damage cover, contents cover, protection against theft, and cover for damage caused by fire or storms, but there’s another crucial aspect that can sometimes get overlooked: public liability cover.

What is public liability insurance for caravans and lodges?

In simple terms, public liability insurance provides financial protection if you’re held responsible for someone getting hurt or their property getting damaged in, at, or by your caravan or lodge.

Here are some real-world scenarios where public liability cover would be valuable.

Whenever your touring caravan is attached to a motor vehicle, it’ll be covered by the vehicle or driver’s motor insurance policy, but the policy’s public liability cover is unlikely to extend to your caravan whilst unhitched and stationary.

Who counts as “the public” in public liability insurance?

The term “public” essentially covers anyone who isn’t in your immediate household.

Neighbours, passersby, site staff, or anyone else using the park’s facilities, such as delivery people or maintenance workers, can make a claim against you if your caravan/lodge causes them injury or damage. Holiday parks generate lots of foot traffic within a community environment, presenting a higher risk than a private home on an isolated plot.

Guests renting your caravan or lodge also count as the public. If you rent your property out, your liability exposure significantly increases as they’re unfamiliar with your property and therefore more likely to have accidents.

Friends and family staying at your caravan or lodge are also considered members of the public for liability insurance purposes. However, many disputes of this nature are settled outside of court. Guests and other park goers are more likely to pursue claims than family or friends since there’s no personal relationship to consider.

How much public liability cover do you need?

Caravan and lodge insurance policies will typically offer public liability cover at different levels, usually ranging from £1 million to £5 million, representing the maximum the insurer will pay out for public liability claims throughout your policy period. While these numbers may seem disproportionately large, legal fees, medical costs, and other compensation can quickly spiral into substantial figures. The policy premium markup between £1 million and £5 million cover is usually fairly modest, making higher cover worthwhile for the extra security it provides.

Many parks require you to have a minimum level of cover in line with their site rules and pitch agreement terms, often to the figure of £5 million. Park owners prefer higher levels of public liability cover to ensure their community is suitably protected.

Is public liability included in caravan and lodge insurance policies?

Many touring caravan, static caravan, and lodge insurance policies will include public liability cover, at various levels, as standard. This is particularly common with specialist caravan insurers who have a strong understanding of the needs of caravan and lodge owners. For policies that do not offer public liability as standard, you can purchase it as an optional extra for an additional cost to your premium. Some policies may exclude or limit rental situations, so if you rent out your caravan or lodge, even occasionally, you may need extra or specialist cover beyond standard public liability.

Never assume that public liability is covered: read your policy documents carefully and ask the insurer questions if you remain uncertain.

Protect yourself with adequate public liability cover

Public liability insurance might not be the most exciting aspect of caravan ownership, but it’s one of the most important protections you can have. The financial consequences of being held liable for someone’s injury or property damage can be devastating without appropriate insurance in place. Don’t wait until an incident occurs to discover you’re inadequately covered or not covered at all.

Our policies are equipped with public liability cover as standard, providing the comprehensive cover you need. Protect yourself and your investment with insurance that truly has you covered.
